Preventative Dentistry

Cleaning and Exams

Brushing and flossing daily are critical to long-lasting dental health, but every six months your mouth needs a deep cleaning that only your dentist can provide.

Tartar, tooth decay, and other issues can easily develop and go unnoticed. This is why it’s so important to see your dentist at Beck Family Dental every six months, like clockwork.

Biannual exams give your dentist the opportunity to evaluate your dental health, catch issues in their earliest stages, and keep you smiling with confidence.

THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR BIANNUAL CHECKUPS

Every six months, you visit the dentist for a cleaning, but it’s really so much more than that. A biannual dental checkup provides many important benefits for your oral health:

  • Remove plaque and tartar, which cause tooth decay and gum disease
  • Polish the teeth to remove stains
  • Assess the gums and bone for signs of disease
  • Screen for oral cancer
  • Identify ways to improve your daily oral hygiene

Nearly half of adults over the age of 29 have gum disease, but you don’t have to be one of them! Tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental issues are common but easily avoidable with regular checkups.

Dental Sealants

Your child’s baby teeth aren’t permanent, but they still need protection.

Dental sealants create a thin plastic coating over vulnerable teeth. Each sealant acts as a shield against decay-causing bacteria so that your child’s smile stays healthy and vibrant.

UNDERSTANDING HOW DENTAL SEALANTS HELP

  • Dental sealants protect teeth from bacteria and decay. They are most often applied to vulnerable teeth like molars.
  • Since sealants prevent cavities, they lower the overall cost of dental care
  • Children are still learning to perfect their dental care habits, so sealants provide extra protection when it’s needed most

HOW ARE DENTAL SEALANTS APPLIED?

It’s very easy to apply dental sealants. Your child won’t experience any pain or discomfort.

  • Sealant is applied like a thin nail polish to the tooth
  • The liquid is hardened with a specialized curing light
  • Wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking

Dental sealants offer a simple, safe, and cost-effective way to protect your child’s vulnerable teeth. With the help of dental sealants, your child can enjoy strong, long-lasting dental health.

Fluoride Treatments

We are all susceptible to tooth decay, which causes cavities, gum disease, and other serious complications.
Fluoride is used to protect teeth from the risk of decay. This is why your toothpaste always includes fluoride as the main ingredient.

If the fluoride from toothpaste isn’t enough, your dentist may recommend fluoride treatments. This is most common for children, but it can also benefit adults who are especially vulnerable to cavities.

When applied every six months, fluoride varnish can prevent tooth decay in children and adolescents. The fluoride strengthens teeth and protects them from erosion. It’s much easier to spread fluoride varnish on the teeth as a preventative appointment than to fill a cavity or cover a damaged tooth with a crown!

HOW IS FLUORIDE TREATMENT APPLIED?

Fluoride is available in many different forms, including trays, gels, and varnish. Here at Beck Family Dental, LLC, we use varnish because it’s simple, mess-free, and fast.

The varnish is gently painted onto the front, back, and top of teeth, where it hardens in just seconds. Overall, the entire fluoride treatment process takes less than two minutes! It really is the easiest and most affordable way to keep your child’s teeth healthy.

Gum Disease Treatments

Regular preventative dental cleanings keep healthy mouths healthy, but you may need specialized attention if your teeth and gums already show signs of gum disease.

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a serious condition that threatens the overall health and structure of your mouth. The CDC reports that nearly 50% of all Americans over the age of 30 have some form of gum disease.

DO YOU HAVE GUM DISEASE?

If you are one of the millions of Americans coping with gum disease, it’s important to seek treatment from Beck Family Dental, LLC as soon as possible. The early stages of gum disease are relatively easy to treat and even reverse, but later stages of gum disease can cause lasting damage.

The most common symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen, painful gums
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Bleeding and infected gums
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold

Depending on the severity of your gum disease, your dentist may recommend one of three different treatment options.

SCALING AND ROOT PLANING

Scaling and root planing is the first line of attack against gum disease. It involves three steps:

  • Removal of plaque from above and below the gum line with specialized instruments
  • Smoothing out of tooth roots to remove hiding places for future plaque and bacteria
  • Frequent checkups to monitor recovery

This minimally invasive treatment for gingivitis reduces uncomfortable symptoms, deep-cleans your entire mouth, and protects you from serious complications like heart disease and oral cancer.

LASER THERAPY

Gum disease can also be treated with the advanced, efficient technology of laser therapy.

Laser therapy uses a narrow, intense beam of light energy to carefully remove or reshape diseased gum tissue, plaque, tartar, and other signs of disease.

This creates rapid results and many benefits for people suffering from gum disease:

  • Faster healing and tissue regeneration
  • Virtually no pain or discomfort during treatment
  • Less dependency on anesthesia
  • Minimal bleeding during and after treatment
  • Reduced risk of bacterial infections after treatment
  • Accurate and aesthetically pleasing results

Patients with significant gum pockets and moderate gum disease are the best candidates for laser therapy.

GUM GRAFTING

Some cases of gum disease are too severe to be treated with just laser therapy or scaling and root planing. In these cases, Beck Family Dental, LLC uses gum grafting to reconstruct the supportive tissues in the mouth.

Gum grafting, also known as tissue grafting, reverses the gum recession caused by periodontal disease. Gum tissue is stitched over the affected areas to eliminate the open pockets where bacteria and plaque thrive. This prevents symptoms of gum disease and helps your mouth heal.

Don’t wait to seek dental care for gum disease. The experts at Beck Family Dental, LLC specialize in periodontal disease treatment. We are here to give you the comprehensive care you need to protect and improve your oral health.

Gingivectomy

Gingivectomy is a procedure used to remove diseased gum tissue from the mouth.

If you are suffering from advanced gum disease, nonsurgical treatments may not be enough to stop the spread of decay and infection. Without more advanced care, periodontitis causes tooth loss and bone loss.

DO YOU NEED A GINGIVECTOMY?

You may be a candidate for gingivectomy if:

  • Other treatments like antibiotics and scaling and root planing have not resolved the areas of loose tissue in your mouth
  • You want to remove diseased tissue from your mouth and start with a “clean slate”
  • You’re concerned about the complications of gum disease, like heart disease and diabetes

HOW IS GINGIVECTOMY PERFORMED?

At Beck Family Dental, LLC, we use advanced laser technology to perform every gingivectomy procedure.

Our soft tissue laser gently removes diseased gum tissue without harming any healthy tissue nearby. This improves the health and appearance of your smile without any pain or discomfort. Over time, healthy tissue grows to replace the diseased tissue the laser removed.

Bruxism Treatment

Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding, is a painful condition of clenching and grinding the teeth while sleeping.

Most people with bruxism don’t realize it’s occurring, but chronic nighttime grinding causes terrible symptoms:

  • Jaw pain and stiffness
  • Sore gums
  • Sensitive and broken teeth
  • Flat, short, or blunt teeth surfaces
  • Earaches
  • Chronic dull headaches
  • Clicking or painful jaw joints

TREATING BRUXISM WITH A CUSTOM MOUTH GUARD

It’s hard to control nighttime teeth grinding, especially if you do it unconsciously! That’s why our Beck Family Dental, LLC team helps patients control bruxism with custom mouth guards.

We take digital impressions to develop a mouth guard designed to perfectly fit your teeth and protect them from future damage. If you try to grind your teeth while wearing your mouth guard, the bite force is distributed and absorbed evenly across the BPA-free plastic.

It’s a quick, easy, and comfortable solution for teeth grinding. Better yet, treating your bruxism now prevents costly restorative treatments in the future for cracked, dull, and missing teeth. Call Beck Peace Dental today to learn more about the best ways to treat nighttime teeth grinding.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a disruptive sleep disorder that causes frequent interruptions to your breathing while you sleep.

Every “pause” in your breathing deprives your body of oxygen. When your brain realizes it isn’t receiving air, it forces you awake to gasp, choke and snort for another breath. This process reopens your airways, but only for a minute. The issue begins as soon as you lay back down.

Many people with sleep apnea endure this cycle up to 30 times per hour, all night long!

As a result, sleep apnea causes severe symptoms and health complications that threaten your overall wellness. It’s important to understand the signs and seek treatment immediately.

DO YOU HAVE SLEEP APNEA?

Many people don’t realize they have OSA since the most obvious symptoms occur while they sleep. Consider these other important signs of sleep apnea:

  • Snoring so loudly that it wakes you up
  • Unexplained mood swings, including depression and anger, which occur because your brain and body are sleep deprived
  • Extreme daytime fatigue, which occurs because OSA prevents you from entering deep, restorative REM sleep

HOW CAN YOUR DENTIST TREAT SLEEP APNEA?

Sleep apnea isn’t a condition that you can ignore and simply hope it disappears. Episodes of apnea become worse and more severe without treatment. If you want to avoid the long-term consequences of sleep apnea, it’s essential to receive treatment as soon as possible.

  • CPAP Machine: This device streams humidified air through the nose to create enough air pressure to keep the throat open while you sleep. This allows steady, uninterrupted breathing all night long.
  • Dental Devices: Mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea can be addressed with a simple dental appliance. This type of device stops your tongue from blocking your airway.
  • Lifestyle Changes: Mild cases of sleep apnea can also be improved by losing weight, quitting smoking, and improving your daily habits.

Sleep apnea is a serious disease that compromises your overall health if left untreated. Reach out to Beck Family Dental, LLC today to get the expert treatment you need. We’re here to help you find the best solutions for your health and wellness.
